Later this week, President Obama will meet with congressional leaders from both the Democratic and Republican parties to share a revised version of the health care program. The package is said to merge together the individual plans that resulted from Senate and House negotiations last year. However, the revised version leans more heavily toward the Senate’s bill.
One such component is the inclusion of a tax on indoor tanning services. It’s mentioned in a section that imposes fees on “various sectors of the health industry,” such as the providers of medical devices, health insurance and pharmaceutical drugs. Tanning salons are grouped in there as well, under the guise of needing to pay back “some of the benefits they get as more Americans purchase health insurance.”
At the meeting, the president hopes to gain Republican enthusiasm for the new proposal. Regardless, there is a chance that the Senate could use a strategy called “budget reconciliation” and pass the measure through without additional Republican support.
