Tanning salon owners are keeping their eyes on a bill working its way through the West Virginia legislative cycle.
One portion of the new initiative requires those under the age of 14 to have a parent or guardian present when the teen uses a tanning device. The other portion of the bill requires those customers over the age of 14 yet under the age of 18 to have a signed statement on file from the teen tanner’s parent or legal guardian. The parental consent form is valid for one calendar year and specifies:
•The parent has read and understands warning information provided by the salon.
•The parent consents to allow the minor to use the tanning equipment.
•The parent agrees the teen tanner will use protective eyewear.
One tanning salon manager went on record to point out the awkward situation for 17-year-olds who go off to college. The bill would still require these customers to have parental consent, even though many other college freshmen are 18 and would be allowed to tan without parental permission.
