Avoiding a Google Ban of Your Salon's Web Site
Posted on: 06/21/2010

There’s a lot of info out there about how to get your salon’s Web site among the lucky “chosen ones” pulled up by Google in a search. However, Google’s exact algorithm for displaying results of searches your customers are probably doing (i.e., “tanning salons in Tulsa”) is a closely guarded secret. Although there are things you can do with the content of your Web site that are known to help – there’s also a lot of misinformation out there, too. Here’s a list of things NOT to do when it comes to building and updating your site, from blogger John Jantsch:

Redirects  Sometimes you just have to move a Web page – it happens. But Google frowns on this because it’s a method that can be used by unscrupulous people as a way to send users to a bad site. If you have to do this, Jantsch recommends doing a 301 direct which lets Google know your move is legit and permanent.

Keyword stuffing  You might have read that you should use common words and phrases throughout your site’s content based on terms that potential customers may use to search for your type of business. So you might sprinkle “tanning salon” or “spray tan” excessively on your site. This is a no-no – it’s called “keyword stuffing” and Google’s smarter than you think. Besides annoying your site or blog’s readers, Google will penalize you for this practice.

Links on “bad” sites that direct to your site  Or vice versa – you have links on your site that direct to sites that have been banned by Google. These are referred to as “bad neighborhoods,” and Google doesn’t like it when you’re associated with them. Jantsch suggests using this tool to scan your site or blog for potential infractions.
