Todd Borregard, owner of Bay Pointe Tanning in Michigan, has come up with a creative way to let his customers know about the tan tax. Borregard printed a 16 x 20-inch poster of Congressman Gary Peters with a paragraph explaining that Rep. Peters voted for the tan tax. He then placed the sign behind his cash register. As Borregard says, “When our clients vote, they will know who their congressman is. We don’t have much lobbying power, but we are on a first-name relationship with 30 million voters. That is our power. My congressman’s district...(has) over 150 small businesses offering tanning...Having his poster looking down over the collection of this tax at 150 locations in his district day in and day out should get his attention.”
Borregard urges other salon owners to follow suit, using these three easy steps to create your own poster:
1. Get the official photo of your congressional representative from their website.
2. Add text to the photo, telling everyone he/she is responsible for the 10 percent luxury tax on tanning.
3. Send the file to Walmart.com. For about $10, you’ll have a16×20-inch poster to frame and hang in your salon by the cash register.
